Painter, sculptor, and author Charles Bragg (1931-2017) was a satirical artist. His art has been exhibited in museums and galleries, commissioned by Playboy, and documented in a PBS program. He won a Gold Medal from the National Society of Illustrators and an Award of Merit from the Art Directors Guild of New York. His publications include Charles Bragg on Medicine (1984), Charles Bragg: The Works! A Retrospective (1999), and Asylum Earth (2013).  Fine condition.  19x15.

Charles Bragg: An Artistic Life

Charles Bragg, born in 1931 in St. Louis, MI, was a multidimensional figure in the American art scene, known for his satirical approach that combined humor with a touch of the macabre. His life was as colorful and varied as his art, reflecting his unique perspective on the world and humanity.

Bragg's journey into the world of art and entertainment began early, as he traveled with his vaudeville performer parents. This exposure to the performing arts undoubtedly shaped his later works, infusing them with a sense of drama and narrative. He initially embarked on a career in performance, attending the High School of Music and Art in Harlem, and later tried his hand at stand-up comedy in California. However, his true calling lay in the visual arts.

Bragg's artistic journey began with commissioned portraits, but he soon found his voice in satirical art. His work, encompassing sculptures, stories, prints, and paintings, often featured celebrities and ordinary people, depicted in a manner that was both humorous and sometimes dark. This unique style brought him acclaim and critical success, earning him numerous honors including the Gold Medal from the National Society of Illustrators and the Award of Merit from the Art Directors Guild of New York.

Bragg once described his approach to art as being driven by his observations of the human race and the world. His works, though not directly autobiographical, reflected his experiences and views, making them relatable and thought-provoking. He was a keen observer, never an innocent bystander, and this perspective was evident in his art.

Described as a mix of Charles Schulz and Hieronymus Bosch, Bragg embraced both the technical skill and the humor inherent in their works. He was known for his self-deprecation and humor, often joking about his approach to art and life. Despite his success, Bragg remained grounded, focusing on creating art that spoke directly to people, without the compulsion to be a trendsetter or technical innovator.

His works have been recognized and collected internationally, featuring in prestigious collections such as the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, the Albrecht Museum of Art in St. Joesph Missouri, the Loch Haven Art Center in Orlando, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
