Splints have many purposes. They can be used to protect:

Tendon lacerations or repairs,

Humerus, elbow, forearm, wrist, hand, thumb and finger fractures,

Crush injuries to the arm, wrist, hand, thumb or fingers,

Joint dislocations

Amputations,

Specialized surgery for skin flaps, skin grafts and burns.

They are also used to prevent movement, for example:

· Tenosynovitis for example deQuervains, ECU tenosynovitis

· Trigger finger, trigger thumb

· Arthritis

Splints can block movement of certain joints to ensure specific retraining, exercise of muscles, stretching and movement to increase movement of stiff joints.
