Description: Handsome copy of this uncommon photographically illustrated book featuring albumen illustrations by British photographers Russell Sedgfield and Frank M. Good.  Text is written by James Redding Ware who wrote early detective novels including one of the earliest featuring a female detective main character written under his more commonly known pseudonym of Andrew Forrester.  Gernsheim notes a first edition of this book (1869) featuring 16 photographs by Sedgfield and 5 by Good with a Presentation edition containing 21 photographs and a Library edition with 15 images.  He also notes a 2nd Edition in 1872 with 24 images, however there is no mention of a 2nd edition in 1871 with 17 images as presented here.  Interestingly, the list of illustrations page only notes 15 images with the 2 additional images not noted.  The list of photographs page credits 3 images to Good with the remaining attributed to Sedfield and the two additional images not credited.  The Bonchurch image in this book is a variation of images found in a different copy, as is the Blackgan Chine image.
William Russell Sedgfield (1825-1902) was trained as an engineer but found an early interest photography at the age of 16.  He went on to become one of the important topographic photographers remaining active from about 1852 to 1872.
Frank Mason Good (1839-1928), British photographer, made four separate visits to the Middle East in the 1860s and 1870s after first serving as Francis Frith’s assistant in Egypt in 1857.  He was admitted into the Photographic Society of Great Britain in 1864.  His works can be found in most of the major collections of the world.  In the 1870s he published, The Holy Land; Egypt, The Nile, Nubia; and Spain.  He also photographed extensively in Europe during this time.
