During Vietnam War, the 106th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron played an important role in providing aerial reconnaissance for U.S. and allied forces. In the early years of the war, the squadron operated RF-101 Voodoo aircraft, which were used for photographic and visual reconnaissance missions over North Vietnam and the surrounding region.

The RF-101 Voodoo was a fast, high-altitude aircraft that was well-suited for reconnaissance missions. The 106th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron used these aircraft to gather intelligence on enemy troop movements, supply lines, and other military targets. The intelligence gathered by the squadron's reconnaissance missions was used to plan and execute U.S. military operations in the region.

Later in the war, the 106th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron was redesignated as the 106th Tactical Fighter Squadron and transitioned to F-4 Phantom II fighter jets. While the squadron's primary mission shifted to air-to-air combat, the F-4 Phantom II was also equipped with reconnaissance capabilities, allowing the squadron to continue supporting U.S. military operations with aerial reconnaissance.
