During Vietnam War, HMM-263, also known as the "Thunderbirds," played a crucial role in medical evacuation, also known as "MEDEVAC," of wounded soldiers. One of the most notable medevac missions conducted by HMM-263 was during the Battle of Dai Do in May 1968.

The battle, which took place near the village of Dai Do in Quang Tri Province, was part of the larger North Vietnamese Tet Offensive. HMM-263 was tasked with providing medevac support to the ground troops involved in the battle.

The terrain in the area was difficult, with dense vegetation and narrow waterways, making it challenging for helicopters to reach the wounded soldiers on the ground. The situation was further complicated by the heavy enemy fire that HMM-263 had to navigate through in order to reach the injured Marines.

Despite these challenges, HMM-263 was able to successfully evacuate dozens of wounded soldiers during the Battle of Dai Do. The squadron's pilots and crew members showed exceptional courage and dedication in carrying out their mission, often flying in under heavy enemy fire to reach the wounded soldiers.

The mission during the Battle of Dai Do was just one example of the critical role that HMM-263 played in providing medical support to U.S. ground troops during the Vietnam War.
