Other relevant information: The author, Mary L. Jobe Akeley (1878-1966) was an American explorer, author, mountaineer, and photographer. She undertook expeditions in the Canadian Rockies and in the Belgian Congo. Akeley worked at the American Museum of Natural History creating exhibits featuring taxidermy and animals in realistic natural settings. Akeley worked on behalf of conservation efforts, including her advocating for the creation of game preserves. She founded Camp Mystic, an outdoor camp for girls. Late in his life, she was also the wife of naturalist and taxidermist Carl Akeley, the subject of this book.
