On offer, we have a Presidential military appointment signed by Chester A. Arthur dated 1884. This is on an official form with the Presidential seal. This appointed Loomis L. Langdon Lieutenant Colonel of the Second Regiment of Artillery on "thirteenth January 1884. It is also signed by the Secretary of War and Adjutant General. In a custom made wood frame, this measures 22" X 18" X 1 3/8" and weighs 4 pounds 4 ounces.
Yes, this is authentic. My rare book dealer has authenticated President Arthur's signature comparing it with others in his inventory. He also assures me the autograph is "live Ink", not printed.
F.Y.I. Loomis Lyman Langdon (1830-1910) had a distinguished career in the Army for 40 years retiring as a Brigadier General. You will enjoy reading about him.
I believe this is in excellent condition. The commission is clear, clean and bold. The recording information on the top left is slightly faded. The paper is slightly wrinkled inside the frame, proving it is not glued down. The frame has some scratches and small chips. As I am not an expert, please see my photographs for more description.
This belongs to my friend who is moving to a much smaller home and parting with many of his treasures.
I will be happy to answer any questions and, of course, combine your shipping when possible.
