The rich historical background of Germany in the days of guilds and meistersingers, is deftly handled. The story follows three wandering minstrels and a lonely, lost maid; their chivalrous friendship and care for her until she becomes part of the household of the great Albrecht Dürer; the pursuit of the witchhunter and her thrilling delivery from his hostile activities.

Background Information:
Lynd Ward crafted these woodcuts shortly following the release of his second wordless novel, "Mad Man's Drum," showcasing Ward at the pinnacle of his creative prowess.

The author's first published story appeared in a Washington, D.C. newspaper when she was eleven years old. In high school she made a fateful decision to give up drawing for writing. She later settled the point for good by marrying visual artist Lynd Ward after his graduation from Columbia University in 1926.
