Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics. naphazoline has a pronounced vasoconstrictor effect on peripheral vessels due to its effect on α-adrenoceptors. when applied to the mucous membranes, it reduces swelling, hyperemia, and exudation, which facilitates nasal breathing in rhinitis. naphazoline promotes the opening and expansion of the excretory duct of the paranasal sinuses and Eustachian tubes, which improves secretion outflow and prevents the settling of bacteria.

Pharmacokinetics. When applied topically, naphazoline is completely absorbed.

The therapeutic effect occurs within 5 minutes and lasts 4-6 hours with intranasal use.

Indication
Acute rhinitis. as an auxiliary agent for inflammation of the paranasal sinuses and middle ear.

To reduce edema of the mucous membrane during diagnostic intervention.

Application
Naphthysin should be instilled into each nostril by tilting the head slightly back and tilting it to the right when instilling into the left nostril and to the left when instilling into the right nostril.

For therapeutic purposes. Adults and children over 15 years old: 1-3 drops of 0.05-0.1% solution in each nostril.

For children aged 3 to 6 years, use a 0.05% solution - 1-2 drops, for children from 6 to 15 years - 2 drops in each nostril.

Naphthyzin should be used 3 times a day, but not more often than after 4 hours.

Naphthysin cannot be used for 5 days by adults and 3 days by children.

Naphthysin can be used again only after a few days.

In case of epistaxis, use tampons moistened with a 0.05% solution of the drug.

For diagnostic purposes. After cleaning the nasal cavity, bury 3-4 drops of 0.05-0.1% solution in each nostril or insert a tampon soaked in 0.05-0.1% solution for 1-2 minutes.

In case of swelling of the vocal cords, inject 1-2 ml of the drug with a laryngeal syringe.

Contraindication
Increased sensitivity to the components of the drug; dry inflammation of the nasal mucosa.

Side effects
If the recommended doses are followed, Naphthysin is usually well tolerated. in isolated cases, side effects occur:

from the side of the immune system: allergic reactions, including Quincke's edema;

from the side of the respiratory system, organs of the chest and mediastinum: burning and dryness of the nasal mucosa. There may be a feeling of severe nasal congestion after the drug wears off.

Systemic side effects are observed, which are provoked by irritation of sympathetic nerves and occur mainly after an overdose of the drug:

from the nervous system: nervousness, headache, tremor;

from the side of the cardiovascular system: tachycardia, palpitations, arterial hypertension;

from the side of the skin and subcutaneous tissue: increased sweating.

The use of 5 days for adults and 3 days for children or very frequent use can cause addiction to the drug, which is accompanied by swelling of the nasal mucosa after taking it.

Long-term use can lead to weakening of ciliary activity and irreversible damage to the nasal mucosa, to dry inflammation of the nasal mucosa.

Special instructions
The drug should be used very carefully in severe diseases of the cardiovascular system (athemia, coronary artery disease), diabetes, hyperthyroidism, pheochromocytoma, etc. caution is necessary with the simultaneous use of MAO inhibitors and other drugs that can potentially increase hell; when using anesthetics (for example, halothane), which increase the sensitivity of the myocardium to sympathomimetics, as well as when using the drug during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Avoid prolonged use by adults and children. Long-term use of the drug can lead to chronic nasal congestion and atrophy of the mucous membrane.

Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The use of the drug is possible only on the prescription of a doctor who will determine the ratio of benefits for the mother / risk for the fetus (child). There is no information on the penetration of naphazoline nitrate through the placenta or with breast milk.

Interactions
The use of Naftizine simultaneously with MAO inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants and maprotiline or within a few days after their withdrawal can cause an increase in hell.

Overdose
In case of an overdose or accidental ingestion of the drug, symptoms of a systemic effect may appear: nervousness, increased sweating, headache, tremors, palpitations, tachycardia, hypertension. pallor of the skin, cyanosis, fever, nausea, spasms, heart attack, cardiac arrest, pulmonary edema, breathing disorders, mental disorders may occur. the inhibitory effect on the central nervous system is manifested by the following symptoms: a decrease in body temperature, bradycardia, increased sweating, drowsiness, shock, apnea, coma.

In case of accidental overdose, you should stop using the drug and immediately consult a doctor. Treatment is symptomatic.

The risk of overdose increases in children, who are more sensitive to negative effects than adults.
