This sixpence, known colloquially as the tanner, or half-shilling, was a genuine British pre-decimal coin. There is a well-known tradition of the bride wearing 'Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe.' A silver sixpence in the bride's shoe is a traditional good luck wedding gesture, a symbol of wishing her prosperity, love and happiness in her marriage. They were also used as a good luck charm by Royal Air Force aircrews in the 2nd world war.   Please see my other dates of pendants and lucky sixpences, sixpence jewellery and key rings, halfpennies, gift and wedding cards, golden and diamond wedding anniversary cards and favour boxes I have for sale for sale on e bay for auction with no reserve.  Postage and packaging at a cost of only 99p.
