Gust Gils (1924-2002) Belgian writer published over 30 works of poetry and prose, founded the avant-garde magazine Gard Sivik, and edited the literary journal Podium. Gils claimed that his poems had a strong musical quality and were best experienced when read aloud; he eventually began to explore the twilight zone between poetry and music in a series of so-called "verbosonic" experiments. Taken with his prose work (chiefly short stories), his literary oeuvre situates him firmly in the tradition of surrealism and the absurd. In late 1969 and on into 1970, Gils experimented with psychedelic drugs, particularly LSD
