Between 1880 and 1888, Sam Tanner owned "Bankers' Exchange," a popular saloon/restaurant located at 210 Main St. in Davenport, Iowa. Locals knew his establishment as "Sam Tanner's."

Tanner was born and raised in Switzerland, living in New York before migrating to Iowa. There, he worked as a salesman and started several businesses before opening the saloon/restaurant known as "Sam Tanner's."
