First edition, first print hardback of ESCAPE AND EVASION by Cyril Penna and published by United Writers Publications Ltd in 1987. Signed 'Best Wishes' by Penna on the title page.

The book is in very good+ condition (blue cloth boards with gold lettering to spine) with only a very slight spinal lean. The book is in a very good unclipped dust jacket that has very light creasing to the top of the front and back covers and top and bottom of the spine. Internally, the pages are lightly age tanned but otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.

Cyril Penna's is the story of a young RAF Sergeant Air Observer who finds himself on the stroke of midnight falling to earth, suspended by the silken cords of his parachute. It was only a matter of minutes from him leaving his disabled aircraft - a Stirling bomber - till he landed with a thud in a field 'somewhere in France'

He was the only member of the crew of seven who was lucky enough to evade capture. Three of the crew were killed and three others were captured.

After a period of forty-four years the author has recorded his experiences as he made his way, often painfully, through France, over the Pyrenees to Spain and then to Gibraltar. The story is a moving tribute to the villages of France who risked everything to assist him to escape from enemy territory, and to those in Andorra who tended him and helped to rehabilitate him mentally and physically from the effects of being a fugitive and having been frost bitten in the mountains.

Escape and Evasion will move any of its readers and makes compelling reading.
