VMF(AW)-312, also known as the Checkerboards, was a United States Marine Corps fighter attack squadron that operated during Vietnam War. The squadron was assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and was based at Chu Lai Air Base in South Vietnam.
The nickname "Death Angels" was adopted by VMF(AW)-312 during their time in Vietnam, and "Ride Nung" was added to the end of the nickname as a reference to the squadron's deployment to Nung, a base in South Vietnam that was located near the border with Laos. The nickname was intended to reflect the squadron's aggressive and effective tactics in combat, and it was frequently used in official and unofficial communications within the unit.
During their time in Vietnam, VMF(AW)-312 flew missions in support of ground forces, providing close air support and conducting reconnaissance missions. The squadron was known for its skill and bravery in combat, and it earned several awards for its service in Vietnam, including the Presidential Unit Citation and the Navy Unit Commendation.
