Sidney George Brown, F. R. S. - Engineer, Inventor and Founder of S. G. Brown, Limited

Sidney Brown or S.G. Brown as he preferred to be known was a prolific inventor. He was awarded some 170 British patents and a sizeable number in the United States, Canada and Europe. He designed precision electro-mechanical apparatus for a wide range of applications. Brown’s interests spanned cable and wireless telegraphy and telephony, medical apparatus, gyro-compasses, industrial public address systems, military, commercial and domestic radio broadcast equipment. He is credited with introducing the first radio loudspeaker, not only the instrument, but the name itself.  Brown was a critical contributor to "wireless" in the early days of BBC broadcasting.  A reserved, perhaps even an aloof individual, it is both his prolificacy and a preference for solitary pursuits which make him a difficult subject for the historian. This volume covers the inventor and the apparatus including domestic radio ranging from crystal sets to multi-valve (tube) receivers, loudspeakers and headphones, commercial telegraphy devices, medical equipment, gyro-compasses, direction-finding equipment, forays into aircraft and internal combustion engine design, guided weapons and much more.
