Vintage Statue of The Virgin Mary made from Ash from the 1991 Eruption of Mt Pinatubo


Dimensions are ; 8 7/8" high , with a base measurement of 5" X 4 1/4" . Material is a light resin and volcanic ash . Mt Pinatubo , in the Philippines , violently erupted on June 15 , 1991 , amplified by the simultaneous arrival of Typhoon Yunya killing 847 people . The massive eruption , the worst in 80 years , releasing 10 Km3 of magma sent an ash plume 40 Km (28 miles) into the air . There have been sculptural figures created from volcanic ash before , significantly the eruption of Mt St Helen's in May of 1980 resulted in such sculpture . These pieces are not only creative but hold history within them . The figure imaged is of a classic sculpture of the Virgin Mary , how apropos . It is handmade and there is a sticker on the bottom which reads ; 'Handmade product using volcanic ash from the June 1991 eruption of Mt Pinatubo , Philippines.'
