Background:  Since 1977, federal law has required Class I and II railroads to issue a "system diagram map" showing "each of its railroad lines potentially subject to abandonmentand identifying "each railroad line for which the rail carrier plans to file an application to abandon or discontinue." 49 U.S.C. §10903(c)(2)

These maps present an historical snapshot of railroad systems, many of which have been merged out of existence.  The maps also show many lines that were eventually abandoned.  Some abandoned lines (or segments of them) are still operated by short lines or other Class Is.  Others have become bike trails, or have disappeared entirely.

The maps use the following color codes:

Red:     Railroad anticipates applying to abandon the line within three years;
Green:  Railroad considers the line "potentially subject to abandonment;"
Yellow:  Abandonment application is pending for the line;
Brown:  Line is being operated under the continuation of service program; and
Black or Dark Blue:  all other owned and operated lines.  49 C.F.R. §1152.10

Seller acquired these maps during a 44-year career in the rail industry.
