It's only seeing this book that I realise "Saloon-Coupes" is a good name for these more affordable Mercedes pillarless 2 doors. I remembering purchasing a W114 series Coupe about 35 years ago. It had been standing close to Flamborough head for some time and it was bright red and lots of rust! Project vehicles of this type were very cheap at the time compared to their more upmarket SL sisters. Of course they were Mercedes saloon car based.

The book goes back much further than the W114 and gives us a substantial background as to how this model designation evolved. It also includes detailed analysis of successors to the W114 including the W123 series and the W124 series. Later W124 series Coupes were designated E Class and were succeeded by the CLK Coupes by the end of the 90's. The book also touches on post millennium models such as the 4 door CLS "Coupe."

Packed in perspex presentation box believed to be Mercedes Main Dealer Packaging, the model is thought to have been fabricated by a premier diecast modeller such as AutoArt of Minichamps but the bespoke MB Dealer Packaging kept the maker anominous to many of us. The model even featured a laser etched front badge of the 3 pointed star! The model is of course a Motor-Sport edition of the CLK

The CLK Coupe finally reached production in 1997 and gave Mercedes a " Saloon_Coupe" for beyond the millennium. It's "four eyes" design became the face of successive models including the E-Class even though the CLK was based on the C Class Saloon.
