Antique Hand
Woven Yomud Turkoman, (Turkmen) Woman’s Belt + Buckle
Circa; Late 19th Century
38 1/2 inches (97.8 cm) wide x 2 1/4 inches (5.8 cm) high
(size does not include the small buckle)
Condition; Good: The item is
flexible but shows use and patination. The belt is backed by black cotton
cloth. The buckle is not attached, and is corroded and probably doesn’t work. The
item as seen is missing ties or a way to fasten it for wearing. It is excellent
as an antique example of Turkoman craftsmanship.
Description: This rare and attractive tribal weaving has beautiful
subtle colors. They are black, white, red, and pink. All the colors appear to be natural dyes.
I found it hidden in my inventory in a closed plastic
crate. It was probably purchased by me at auction in the late 1980s, over 35
years ago.
