This photo is part of a MUCH larger and very eclectic collection of photos and documents that was purchased in Europe several years ago. The red and white acid free sticker on the reverse was part of the previous owners catalog and collection system.

Up for sale is another extremely rare photo taken by Royan M. Linn aka J. B. Linn. This 1863 Card Photograph is titled “Sunset Rock Lookout Mountain TENN.” In 1863 Linn was commissioned to photograph soldiers led by Captain John Wilson reenacting the climb to plant 8th Kentucky Infantry Regiment battle flag on the summit of Lookout Mountain. This resulted in 2 photos. One photo, owned by the Library of Congress shows 4 soldiers ascending the back side of the mountain. The photo for sale is the second photograph taken that day, from the front side of the mountain. The last photo in this listing is provided for reference only and is not included in the listing.

The reverse has a gold heat stamp that reads “Sunset Rock Lookout Mountain TENN.”

Measurements: overall approximately 8 by 5 inches

Condition: overall good condition. The front lower margin has “Lookout Mountain” written by hand. The words are fading and extremely hard to read. The photo itself has little to no scratches or signs of excessive handling. The reverse has tape residue on the top left corner. The edges of the card show signs of handling.
