The term 'Bachelor's Button' is thought to derive from the fact they did not require to be sewn on like a regular button and could be fastened onto a garment to disguise a missing button until it could be replaced.
Solitaire buttons were first patented in 1872 by George West as "Fasteners for Collars and Cuffs". Initially there were many different fastening mechanisms, but it was these solitaries or bachelors buttons that proved the most successful.

It measures 3/4 inch (2 cm) across x 1/2 inch high (1.5 cms)
