Antique UNUSUAL 18th C. Pewter Double Spice Urn on Stand

  • For your consideration is a very unique early spice urn
  • Rectangular form with a tray
  • The cups holder stands on six turned columns
  • The whole urn rests on four bun feet
  • It is very intriguing, because it obviously bore multiple inscription and/or markings that have been intentionally removed back in time. On the top some minor etched details remain, suggesting possible initials and / or dating. There are signs that markings were scratched out at at least 5 places on top and 6 at the underside
  • It is quite a mystery why this was necessary. We may guess that it could've been English, and the markings removed by the early American patriots, or it could've been stolen and made unrecognizable
  • Anyway, a really RARE and unique curiosity item with interesting history
  • There are scratched numbers 1746 6 / MRL/ 1466, most likely collector's inventory number
  • Circa 18th century, found in New York state
  • All original
