VTG Detroit Woodenware magazine rack, Mattoon WI Timber and Land Co shabby cottage

This magazine rack has been in my possession for 30+ years—I estimate it to be from the 1930s based on the original decals, paint patina and shape. The design is curvy and along with the stickers is reminiscent of Art Nouveau of the turn of the century and early 1900s.

It has a paper label on an inside panel that is printed:From Wisconsin Timber & Land Co Mattoon, Wisconsin. And then in typewriter print: Detroit Woodenware & Mfg Co., Detroit, Mich. (The Detroit Woodenware Co was in existence in 1896 per other letterhead found in research. I haven’t found exact dates for the Land Co in Mattoon.)

The magazine rack has two compartments on each side, with curved dividers rising in height to a curved carrying handle.

The patina is amazing. The layers showing through create a wonderful cottage core shabby chic look.

Based on the decals and paint colors showing through, the original paint seems to have been a bright yellow-spring green and a deep aqua blue.  At some time, long ago,  the entire piece was painted a deep dusty mauve, with the decals painted around. There is a large decal on the two wide sides and small matching decals on the two shorter sides.

Approx. 13” across x 19” tall x 7.5” wide.
