Katazome (型染め) is a Japanese method of dyeing fabrics using a resist paste applied through a stencil. With this kind of resist dyeing, a rice flour mixture is applied using a brush or a tool such as a palette knife. Pigment is added by hand-painting, immersion or both. Where the paste mixture covers and permeates the cloth, dye applied later will not penetrate. Chinese floral dyeing methods were merged with South Pacific batik methods to create these works. Generally traditional vegetable dyes were used to create the colors. The colors are vibrant!

Mr. Takeshi Nishijima was a major figure among the Mingei (Folk Art) Movement, a twentieth century endeavor to preserve traditional arts and crafts. He was both a professor of art at Kyoto University and "a graphic and textile designer. He was associated with Haruo Kuriyama of the Wazome Kogei company and was also friends with Kuriyama was a friend of Keisuke Serizawa, the best known katazome artist, who produced calendars annually beginning in 1946. Nishijima has exhibited in numerous shows and won the coveted Grand Prize at the Kyoto Art Exhibit. He was designated a "Living National Treasure" in 1956.
