In the movie "Mircea" (Mircea The Elder, Mircea Cel Batran), Sergiu Nicolaescu – both director and actor – gives an artistic, visual shape to the portrait of one of Romania’s most emblematic historical characters.

Impressive cast, monumental war scenes, and all the minute details that have turned Nicolaescu’s movies into legendary cinematic events are present here.

The movie itself has had an uneasy story, the author refusing any attempt of censorship from the communist regime that kept an iron grip on the country until 1989. The movie’s premiere took place on December 21st, 1989, a date that marked the beginning of a new chapter in Romanian history.
