The previous Series C continued to circulate following decimalisation in 1971 until this reduced-size Series D was introduced in 1978. From 1983 this short-lived denomination was gradually replaced by the £1 coin.
Watermark: Sir Isaac Newton.
Date first issued: 9 February 1978.
Date last issued: 31 December 1984.
Date ceased to be legal tender: 11 March 1988.
Varieties:
a. Green signature J. B. Page. Back guilloches are dark green at lower left and right  (1978-80).
b. Black signature D. H. F. Somerset. Back guilloches are light green at lower left and right (1981-84).
