1940 Press Photo Silk stockings being made by a knitting machine - kfa41303

"Surprise" ... If you ever saw grandma knit a stocking, you will be surprised to learn that silk stockings are knit flat, like a piece of cloth, from the top down. In this photo, the hundreds of needles in the machine are at work on the ankle. When the stocking leaves this machine, the foot is knitted on.
