Neoprene is a dressmaking fashion or wetsuit material that is made from a synthetic rubber material sandwiched between Polyester, with a Spandex mix to make it more flexible.
Please note that neoprene (and hence wetsuits) is moderately water resistant, not a waterproof fabric, which has insulating properties. (Wetsuits are designed to absorb water in a way that keeps a thin layer between the skin and material. This thin layer is heated by the body and hence acts like a blanket over the wearer). It is also suitable for making items such as orthopaedic joint supports and laptop/phone/tablet covers.
This neoprene material is 2mm thick. It is open cell which means that the centre is more like honeycomb rather than solid rubber. Wetsuits generally are between 2 and 6mm, and can be open or closed cell, so please be aware that our fabric should not be used in extremely cold water as greater thickness/closed cell neoprene is required for this.
Neoprene does not fray.
