Just press and hold the push button top to serve. Comes with a colored tab to indicate hot or cold or can be used to indicate if tea or coffee is regular or decaf. If you are using carafe for a hot beverage it's recommended to keep it hot longer to fill with hot water for 5 mins then empty and fill with your favorite hot beverage. I've always done this and my coffee has always stayed hot.
