1940 Press Photo Francis Carson and his dog sit outside his house car in Indiana
Indianapolis, Indiana - Francis Carson of Greenville, Massachusetts, finds the time passes quickly as he awaits the arrival of the 500 mile race on May 30th. Carson pulled into the pole position, first place in the line up outside the gates of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. As the nation's Number One automobile racing fan Carson, if he maintains his position until the morning of the race, will be escorted through the gates with ceremony and given his choice of any parking space in the infield, from where he will watch the 28th running of the World's premiere speed classic, the 500M. Carson said he had been trying to be the first in the line for several years. He sleeps in the special house car and has only his dog for company. Each day how ever, he goes into the Speedway to watch the tune ups of the race drivers now practicing for the big race. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo Is dated 1940.
