This is a 'Buy it Now' for a 1911 King George V (Police) Coronation Medal with the Metropolitan Police reverse.

Medal with the correct official engraved naming to: P.C. W. BRETT.

There were two Police Constables named W. Brett serving with the Metropolitan Police in 1911, and as the medals only ever give one initial more research is required.

The first is the 1915 Distinguished Conduct Medal recipient, William Herbert Brett, who was born in Bermondsey, London in 1883. He joined the Metropolitan Police on 18 September 1905, serving on H Division at Whitechapel (Warrant Number 92348), with former service with the Royal Engineers noted. He is described in the 1916 Wisden edition as having the reputation of being the best wicket keeper in the Metropolitan Police.

In the 1911 Census he is noted as living at the Police Section House in Cannon Row, then he was recalled for service with the Royal Engineers on 8 August 1914. He was awarded the DCM as a Corporal serving with the Royal Engineers, with it being announced in the London Gazette on 30 June 1915 with the following citation: "For conspicuous gallantry on 9th April, 1915, at Givenchy, when, engaged in erecting wire entanglements in front of the trenches, after dark, he assisted in rescuing, under a heavy fire, one of the covering party who had been wounded."

William Brett then died of his wounds at Fort Pitt Military Hospital in Rochester on 3 May 1916, and is buried in Mitcham, Surrey, with a great deal of information on him on Ancestry, including his service papers.

The second officer was Walter Brett, who was born in Stowmarket in Suffolk in 1875. He joined the Metropolitan Police on 12 August 1910 and initially served on B Division at Chelsea (Warrant Number 99026). In the 1911 Census he is noted as single and living at the Police Section House in Westminster. He later transferred to G Division at King's Cross, but then resigned from the force on 6 August 1921. Again there is more information on Ancestry for Walter Brett.

The medal is in good VF condition and comes with a pin clasp mount as worn. Documents include a print-out of the Met Police Careers for both William and Walter along with a copy of the 1911 Census for both officers. We will also include the Met Police Service and Attestation Medical Sheets for William, along with his entry in Wisden's and probate.
