New Handmade Fair Trade African Zulu Telephone Wire Bangle

approximately 2 inches wide band, with 7.5-8 inches inner circumference, and 2.25-2.5 inches inner diameter

These candy colored bangles are the latest innovation of Zulu telephone wire weavers! Another tribute to the ingenuity and artistic ability of the African people! This glorious wearable art looks like it was formed from some magical substance in Fairy Land. A gentle sheen and beautiful texture just beg to be touched. It might be made of spun jewels. In reality, it is much more wonderful. If you need another color, let us know; we often have more than can be put up individually.

Please note that we try as much as possible to show our bangles in the true to life colors. However, various browsers may show them slightly differently. The most common difference is the colors appearing lighter than in reality. If color is a major issue for you, you may wish to email us, and we will try to describe and/or help on this end. These bangles are NOT ADJUSTABLE, so you may wish to carefully check to see if the size will work for you.

Wire, of any kind, has only recently become commonplace. Drawing wire used to be extremely laborious and complex. In Africa, it was even used as money several hundred years ago. Eventually, it began to decorate objects and jewelry, then to form containers and baskets such as imbenge (beer pot covers). Beading was often added to the weavings for a punch of color. With the advent of modern telephone wire, Zulu night watchmen began using the recycled, but still bright strands to adorn their walking sticks. Finally, bowls and baskets were fashioned from the rainbow of shades. The glorious hues needed no further decoration, and a new (and old) art form was born. Today, fine works are created by the techniques of the past, but with the materials of today.

Creative African weavers from the BAT cooperative have taken candy colored telephone wires and used them to sculpt this gleaming work of art. Artists of the Bartel Arts Trust produce these amazing pieces that grace collections around the world. We recommend the book Wired by David Arment and Marisa Fick-Jordaan for those who wish more information on the larger bowls and baskets.
