1770 - 1885 Carved Folk Art Coconut Shell / Gourd Memento, El Salvador Commemorative Insignia w. Izalco Volcano


  • For your consideration is a very unique and intricate piece of Latin American Folk Art
  • Finely carved gourd or coconut shell depicting an erupting volcano on one side and the national coat of arms of El Salvador at the other.
  • The text around the two images relates to the venerated symbols of the Salvadorian independence
  • At the volcano side it reads in Spanish: "Volcan Yzalco / Segun datos empeso a crecer en el año 1770"  (Volcano Izalco / Accordingly to data it started to grow in 1770) which is a fact. The Izalco volcano is one of the youngest geological formations, which started forming in 1770, with over 50 eruptions since then until 1966. It is included in El Salvador national coat of arms. 
  • At the other side, the text is "Republica Del Salvador /15 de setiembre 1821 / 1885" Republic El Salvador 15 of September 1821 / 1885
  • On this date (09/15/1821) El Salvador, as well as four other Central American nations, was declared independent from the Spanish Empire by the Act of Independence signed in Guatemala City
  • Exquisite and rich detail all over around with foliate and floral patterns, including a monkey resting under tree and a small mammal walking
  • The carving is dated on both sides
