Antique Tibetan Charm Box with Prayers on Paper, Miniature Tangka


  • For your consideration is a SCARCE authentic artifact from Chamdo, Tibet, adjoining the eastern border of Szechuan province
  • A traditional Tibetan charm or prayer box, designed to be worn as accessory
  • In pointy oval shape, hand shaped and hammered from thick copper sheet
  • Embossed on top is the symbol of wish fulfilling
  • The loops on side align and are threaded with worn jute cord, holding two wooden beads
  • It comes with a set of inscribed papers, most likely prayers and one painted Buddha seated on a lotus throne image, a small tangka
  • A matching inventory number is painted on both pats of the body
  • A very intriguing find, a valuable part of a private collection or a museum
  • Similar artifacts could be examined in the collection of the Peabody Museum of Archology and Ethnology at the Harvard University (ex. object # 37-131-60/3012.1)
  • Circa mid/second half of the 19th century or earlier, Tibet

  • Measurements: Approximately 5.5" x 5.25" x 2.75" overall
  • It weighs 11 oz.

  • Condition: Very Good overall. Please see photos. Fine warm copper patina developed over time. The tread is worn, but present and intact. All original.
