Antique c.1790-1800 Marked Samuel Hollins Red Stoneware Mug Tankard Silvered Rim

  • For your consideration is a very beautiful and scarce to find late 18th century Josiah Wedgwood style vessel
  • A mug or tankard, made of red stoneware with engine-turned decoration and applied sprigged reliefs, consisting of vertically ribbed lower part and a frieze of classical figures alternating with floral arrangements
  • The figures rendered are a muse or just a woman with a harp, a woman watering a plant, a mother with a child, some cherubs / putti frolicking
  • Silvered bands outline the top rim and the edges of the handle, there is also a painted with silver luster oval medallion and three drops of silver on the arch of the handle
  • Although called red stoneware, the color is more like maroon to brown
  • Incised stamp at the bottom S. HOLLINS
  • Samuel Hollins who operated a pottery at Vale Pleasant, Shelton, Staffordshire, from around 1769 until the early 19th century, was apparently a potter in his own right. He operated in tandem with Wedgwood to fill orders, and was involved with the partnership of the New Hall Porcelain Works. He may have retired in 1808 (Reference: British Museum)
  • Pieces manufactured by this pottery are extremely rare and seldom seen on the market
  • There are examples in major museums, such as British Museum, where you can see a bowl (inv. # 1887,0307,K.27), and a teapot (inv. # 1887,0307,K.28) with similar pattern
  • In Victoria & Albert Museum's ceramics collection there are just a few items in display: a pitcher with similar silver luster (inv. # 2537-1901), a teapot (inv. #841&A-1873) and a sugar basin with similar pattern  (inv.# 841&A-1873)
