Offered for your consideration is this Antique 1901-1920 Sterling Mini Souvenir Spoon with a Gold-Wash engraved bowl depicting the building of the "STATE NORMAL SCHOOL" SPRINGFIELD, S.D.". On the embossed handle it has the words "GOOD LUCK" along with the Indian "peace" sign & a good luck horseshoe and four leaf clovers. Manufactured by the Paye & Baker Silver Co of North Attleboro, MA (1901-1960). It measures approx. 3-1/2" long & weighs in at 3.6 g. Interesting history here...it started as Southern "State Normal School" in 1881, became Southern State Teachers College in 1947, Southern State College in 1964, and finally USD... the University of South Dakota (at Springfield) in 1971 (which I am sure was confusing for the state, because there already was another USD located in Vermillion, SD). The Springfield, S.D. school closed in 1984 & the campus is now home to Mike Durfee State Prison. FYI: The Southern State Normal School in Springfield, South Dakota, was also called the Springfield Normal School, & offered a college education for those who had completed high school. A First Grade Teaching Certificate could be acquired in one year of study, while a State Certificate & Life Diploma could be acquired in two years.
