* Ormandy's only complete symphony of Rachmaninoff.
Also included is a "symphonic dance" dedicated to the composer.
The Philadelphia Orchestra was Rachmaninoff's most favorite orchestra during his lifetime, and had actively featured his work since Stokowsky's time.
Ormandy also had a close relationship with Rachmaninoff, including the world's first recording of Symphony No. 2 and the composer's solo piano concertos Nos. 1 and 3, and this long performance tradition crystallized with the stereo recording of all symphonies on this album. The way in which the
charm of melancholic works colored with melancholy is fully sounded is truly a word of virtuoso art.
"Symphonic Dance" was dedicated to the duo in 1941 and is the only recording by Ormandy to be a masterpiece of historical value. First
