Overdrive with switchable clipping diode and natural sound.
The distortion of the Special Cranker's all-discrete circuitry pushes the amp sound very naturally without significantly changing the character of the original sound. It is like adding a vacuum tube to a preamp. Single notes produce rich, harmonic sustain, and chords are given thickness and crunch, but chords are not destroyed. This is an overdrive that is not associated with muddy bass or pulled back midrange.

The clipping diodes are selectable between germanium and silicon. Distortion in the germanium mode is slightly softer and the highs are rounder. The silicon mode, on the other hand, emphasizes high frequencies and has a more modern distortion and higher output.

The Special Cranker is available in voltages ranging from 9V to 18V, and when used at 18V, it has tighter bass, a more brilliant presence, and slightly higher output. EQD president and developer Jamie Stillman recommends using the Germanium mode at 18V.
