For sale is A very rare top quality ANTIQUE PRIMITIVE wooden MORTAR & PESTLE set likely dated back to the early 1800s. It is made with high end Lignum Vitae wood and is very large in size, extremely dense and heavy. It is a high quality turned piece with highly primitive body form and thick wall. Note the dense tree rings at the base. The pestle is also made of the two tone Lignum vitae material, also Beautifully turned to its elegant shape. Most likely, the original pair. Quite amazing!

It is a rare find due to its large size and excellent condition. The mortar measures 6.5” in height and 6” in diameter. The pestle is 11” long. Such a heavy built piece is likely not for home use, but at use over a 19th century apothecary counter by a pharmacist.

The patina on the wood is amazing. The interior of the mortar and the pestle’s pounding end have authentic heavy wear. The primitive crude bottom also suggests its long history of usage. There is no cracks observed. EXCELLENT CONDITION! There are some minor surface scratches, rim chips and natural imperfections on the mortar commensurate with age and use. The pestle has a tight crack on one side and a small loss to the handle. I try to take photos from all sides, so please check them carefully! All in all, an amazing primitive piece in rare-to-encounter nice condition. It would be a great display for an antique primitive lover’s home.
