Absolutely not! All movies we sell on eBay are believed to be in the public domain in the U.S., and are sold from one collector to another. No rights are given or implied. What we charge is the service of duplicating the disc, and of course our time in hunting down these rare titles in the best condition possible. If a particular title becomes commercially available via an established home video company, we must and will discontinue selling it immediately.

Noita palaa elämään (1952; Finland; also known as Return of the Witch, The Witch, and The Witch Returns to Life; Finnish spoken with custom yellow English subtitles that you access through your remote; full-frame format, 4:3 ratio. Region-free, plays in dvd players anywhere in the world.)

While it’s from Finland and not Sweden, this film reminds one of Bergman films from the late 40s and early 50s, especially the comedies. A group of upper-class archeologists and explorers sit around making jokes about sex that inadvertently reveal their various hang-ups and sexual dysfunctions: one guy is in love with another’s wife, one is impotent, etc. So... despite the light tone, there is a disturbing sexuality lurking beneath the surface. 

This gets literalized with the appearance of the witch (Mirja Mane, easy on the eyes), who appears naked in a gravesite that the archeologists recently uncovered. The men act super creepy toward her, allowing her to seduce and drive them mad, bringing all that sexual jealousy and trauma to the surface. The film also plays up the class difference of the archeologists and the local peasants; the latter are superstitious and want to send her back to her grave, seemingly unaffected by her beauty. [Toward the beginning one of the locals calls archeology “bourgeois bulls--t”]

There are nice atmospheric shots of creepy fog blowing over the fields near the excavation site, but any horror elements are undercooked. The witch's magical powers are established through George Méliès-style trick editing: she makes a horse disappear; a snake appears; and then she starts appearing and disappearing herself, trying to drive the men crazy with unfulfilled desire. 

There is a good bit of nudity when the witch dances around completely naked near the end, which must have been pretty provocative in 1952. According to IMDB, this got a limited run in the U.S. in 1954, which probably means it played grindhouses.
