Civil War cover with COLUMBUS/O double-circle postmark and #65 3c rose tied by "prison bars" fancy cancel, with imprint at top left: "Head Quarters, Military Commander, Columbus, Ohio. Official Business", addressed to "Mr. Harvey Vance, Care Major Genl. Wallace, Burnet House, Cincinnati, Ohio".

A scarce War Date cover to LEW WALLACE, (1827-1905), Civil War Major General, his late arrival on the field at Shiloh created a controversy that he spent the remainder of his life tying to vindicate his actions; Governor of New Mexico Territory, 1878-1881, during which term he met secretly with Billy the Kid and made a deal to provide him with amnesty in exchange for testimony - a deal reneged on by a local district attorney; Author of the best selling novel, "Ben Hur: A Tale of The Christ" (1880); U.S. Minister to the Ottoman Empire, 1881-1885.

Harvey Vance was probably Harvey B. Vance, who was mustered into the 11th Indiana Infantry on Aug. 31, 1861, the same day that Lew Wallace was commissioned the Regiment's Colonel - apparently Vance went on to serve Gen. Wallace in another capacity after he became General.

Condition: A bit rough at left, cutting into part of the imprint. (see photos for condition).
