Antique wrought iron extending balance beam scales

This incredibly old wrought iron balance scale is superbly crafted as photos show, it has a large hook at one end on a pivot and an eyelet at the other end for holding it up.

It is adjustable in length with a closed length of 76cm extending to 1.4 meters.

How it actually works I haven’t a clue, probably more aimed as a home decor item, would look fantastic around an old fireplace. I have been told these are probably mercantile scales but I cannot confirm that so please view photos and make your own judgement.
