I have enjoyed ownership of these two volumes for a number of years, and with no family members who are Hardy fans, it is time to let someone else enjoy them.

This sale is for the two volume first edition  'Far From The Madding Crowd' by Thomas Hardy published in 1874 by Smith, Elder & Co.,  15 Waterloo Place, London.

The volumes have been restored and  are in good overall condition with tight binding and a solid feel about them.

There are a number of things prospective purchasers should know about the restoration before considering to bid.

Volume One -
Inside the front board is the number 1017. The lining is replaced, so whether this number has been copied from the original, I do not know.

Notes written in pencil -  Frontispiece illustration and the one opposite page 32  are facsimilies, but the other 4 illustrations in volume one are original.

Volume Two -
Frontispiece illustration is a facsimile, 5 others in this volume are original. Page leaf  289/290 is missing. Whether this is an original error, or one from the restoration, I do not know. There is a loose leaf substitute with printed text from those pages included.

Apart from the above, the volumes are original. There are two previous owners names written in the book, and it looks like it may have spent some time in the Falkland Isles.

Happy Bidding! Good Luck!
