1974 Press Photo Simulated Rescue Mission Pulls "Astronaut" From Space Capsule
This is an original press photo. Cape Canaveral, FL -- A team of 14 men stationed 1,800 feet from the launch pa is poised to rescue the astronauts in case of an emergency. Known as the Astronaut Rescue Team, the 14 men are from a fire-control unit and medical section of the military service. The job of these volunteers is to race to the launch pad in their armored personnel carriers, take high-speed elevators to the 320-foot level of the tower, get the astronauts out of the spacecraft and carry them to safety.
