Wood engraving, or xylography, is a common method of letterpress printing that was used towards the end of the 18th century. It was developed from woodcuts by Thomas Bewick in the 19th century.
Templates of drawings, pictures or photographs are transferred to a wooden board cut across the grain with a wooden burin instead of a knife, processed and then printed on paper. Because these wood engravings are printed directly from the woodblock without photomechanical reproduction processes, they are original graphics!
Especially between 1850 and 1900 they were used in books and magazines of the 19th century. century illustrative purposes. This also explains why wood engravings were almost always printed together with text contributions and often have text on the back. Wood engravings almost always come from print media (newspapers, illustrated magazines or books) of the 19th century. century.

Documentation:
Tamins is a municipality in the Imboden region of the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. It is located around 10 km west of Chur. Under the castle rock in the Reichenau district, the front and back Rhine join to form the Rhine. To the west of the Reichenau-Tamins train station in the Domat/Ems municipal area, the Rhaetian Railway line separates from Chur: one line leads via Thusis into the Engadine, the other via Disentis/Mustér to Andermatt. After crossing the Vorderrhein, this line lies in the Tamins area up to the height of the Wackenau ruins. The municipal area extends beyond the Kunkelspass to the north into the Tamina Valley. Above this area and the Grossalp there, the municipal area extends into the high mountains with the Ringelspitz as the highest point at over 3200 meters. The SAC-Ringelspitzhütte completes the alpine character. During the excavation of a building site southeast of the church hill, remains of settlements were found, which most likely date back to the Neolithic period. According to the Graubünden Archaeological Service, such a settlement is one of the oldest sites in the canton.
