1953 D Struck Through Lamination Flap US Mint Error Coin Jefferson Nickel.

I believe this piece, at the time of striking, likely had a lamination flap that was still attached to the planchet. When struck, that flap acted as an object between the dies, causing a "strike through" error. Since that time, the flap has fallen off, and what is remaining is the struck through area. It is heavily circulated.
