Alan James Eastwood - Seeds NM ORIGINAL UK LP
This criminally overlooked album by this early 70's singer-songwriter will surely please fans of artist like Nick Drake and Bill Fay. Nice string arrangements, along with a number of other instruments really spice up these jazz-tinged folk songs.
Original UK pressing on President Records (PTLS 1037) from 1971.
Condition:
The gatefold sleeve is in EX condition and the record is in NM condition.
review from recordcollectormag:
Alan James ‘Bugsy’ Eastwood had been the singer with The Exception: an unsung but competent 60s rock band from Birmingham. This, his first solo effort, moved with the changing times of the decade’s end, and melds Eastwood’s impressive rock sensibilities with a folk thread – to superb effect.
His arresting voice is the album’s primary weapon, its wistful soulfulness papering over, in places, some rather passé lyrics. Yet it’s hard to see why, across great down-the-line singer-songwriter fare such Evenin’ Rain or Virgin Morn, Seeds is so often tagged as an acid-folk record. It isn’t. Flashes of Nick Drake’s percussive jazziness do rear up from time to time but, actually, this deserves to stand as a great 70s singer-songwriter record that sets its own tone and meter.
Cherry Red have done a great job in expanding the original long-player with some earlier singles and a standalone track, Beautiful, that Eastwood recorded with noted 60s vocalist Marilyn Powell. Something of a gem (and one whose original vinyl will set you back the best part of £200), this is a welcome archaeological find.
