John Goddard was born on the 4/4/1877 at Wells, Somerset, a farm labourer by trade, he enlisted into the Royal Navy 18/11/1896 as a Stoker 2nd Class. He served on a variety of H.M. ship and shore bases including: Victory, Royal Sovereign, Trafalgar, Victory II, Victory III, Hanibal, Duke of Wellington, Cressy, Firequeen, Fisgard, Hermione, Edgar and to shore for discharge 17/11/1908.

He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Portsmouth 18/11/1908, service number B2869. Recalled for WW1, he served on the Europa (Diadem-class protected cruiser) 2/8/1914 – 17/7/1917 and took part in the Gallipoli Campaign. Victory II 18/7/1917 – 30/9/1917. Research (Portland, used as a depot ship for locally employed armed trawlers) on the Homayun (boom defence vessel) 1/10/1917 – 31/5/1918. Attentive II (shore base for the Dover Patrol) 1/6/1918 – 30/9/1918. Victory I 1/10/1918 – 6/10/18, Pembroke II 7/10/18 – 22/2/1919 and discharged.

Awarded L.S. & G.C. Medal January 1918.
