STEAMBOAT TO THE ROCKIES

Well, Meriwether Lewis summed it up here in this river story entitled STEAMBOAT OF THE ROCKIES by Walter Havigurst when he said, “The difficulties which oppose themselves to the navigation of this immense river arise from the rapidity of its current, its fallen banks, sandbars and timber which remain wholly or partially concealed in its bed. It would have astonished him to know that half-a-century later following maneuvers of trial and error that vessels named the Chippewa and Key West and crew would unload cargo at Fort Benton, some twenty-five hundred miles above St. Lois, in the shadow of the Bear Paw Mountains and the Lewis Range. Seldom do you find a real history of the old Steamboats of the west. I mean, with real names of the Captains (i.e. Joseph La Barge – pilot of the Benton) – a list of the forts and towns and the waterfronts (St. Louis) they serviced – one fantastic adventure after another with the usual governmental interference cutting off funds from Congress – just making it tough on steamboat travel on the rivers of the west. Look below, have you ever seen an index like this? – unbelievable –

A chronicle of our past – you must save it.

Folks, following my retirement, I have dedicated my remaining hours to indexing the Genealogy of our western pioneers. During my research, I discovered that thousands of our kinfolk lay unfound and unrecognized on some book dealer’s shelf. Because Old Western History and Memorabilia was printed before computer indexing, I index every item I sell.

This complete index will be bound and included in this offering at no additional cost.

I hope you appreciate the effort.

Please read this. There were many a western story published – the common ones about cowboy and Indians are listed on Ebay every day but the rarer ones bout the steamboats of the old west like this one are seldom found. Collectors treasure them and their price guide value rises every day. They are hard to find. I hunt them out cause really the better, untold and rarer stories were published in the rest.

Here’s one of ‘em.

STEAMBOAT TO THE ROCKIES

By Walter Havighurst

Folks, sooner or later - Genealogists are going to realize that their family kinfolks are laying on some dealer's dusty shelves. If I can contribute to finding one little name or photo of that long lost ancestor you have been waiting to find, it's worth all the time I spend. As a tribute to the honor of our American Ancestors, Forefathers, Sailors, Soldiers, and our Native American Indians, my indexed listings will include all names mentioned in the story from this time on.

NAMES AND HISTORY OF THE OLD

STEAMBOATS OF THE WEST

OLD STEAMBOAT MEMORABILIA IS RAPIDLY DISAPPEARING

While others clip ads from magazines, I save history. It’s a shame that our past is being lost. It’s as simple as that.

What a story, Rare Story!!! Great Pictures. You will love it as it was published in this old complete western magazine printed on heavy slick paper many years ago. The issue is in excellent condition, the cover is pristine and in vibrant color.

As clearly stated in my description, this is featured story in a rarely found and seldom read unusual and complete western magazine. I don't give out name of publication or date because I have caught competitors copying my index and work and trying to sell it as theirs. I hope you understand.

You don't see this kind anymore. Excellent condition.
