'A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL - except the 97 who died and the 10,458 who were injured at the Rio carnival' - three-page photo feature/report on the latest Rio festival which this year was attended by about three million locals in the four days and nights, only with plenty of casualties with many just dropping dead from heart attacks or sheer exhaustion, with others killed by drink-crazed friends, drunken drivers or over-protective boyfriends of some of the scantily clad girls - features two b&w and nine colour photos which capture the happier side of the carnival, with six b&w photos capturing the downside.

'A SPOONFUL OF SUGAR HELPS THE HICCUPS DIE DOWN' 'People have tried holding their breath, praying, psychiatry, even mustard poultices to stop hiccuping...but the best cure is one of the simplest...(3/4 page feature on the problem which includes a 1950s b&w photo of Jack O'Leary from Los Angeles who is pictured reading letters sent to him during his non stop hiccuping which lasted eight years!').

 'GIVE UP DRINK OR WE'LL SING TO YOU' - 'For 50 un-harmonious years bands of belligerent women raided bars and haunted customers with the threat...of singing' (1/2 page feature).

This week's 'True-life drama' story has the headline 'HE DOESN'T STAND A CHANCE!' - 'The harbour pilot made a desperate, futile grab for the spray-soaked rope, then, as he plunged into the surging sea, the two boats crashed together' (near one-page story from South Africa in November last year (1971) - includes a colour re-enactment photo).

 'FOUND - THE SON WHO VANISHED IN THE WAR' - heart-warming story of how Dorothea Etzrodt's son Klaus, who she hadn't set on eyes after he vanished during an air raid on Dresden, was reunited with him last year (1971) in the Ukraine, after seeing a snapshot of him in a Russian magazine - six b&w photos featured.

'A fantastic security screen was put up to protect the secrets of the D-Day invasion, then...'CROSSWORD PUTS BRITAIN IN PERIL' - 'The men at MI5 got a shock when crucial codewords appeared as solutions in a daily newspaper puzzle...that's why they demanded some answers from a schoolmaster'' (1/2 page+ feature).

  'Dial 999 - there's a hand in the boot' 'Police keep receiving false alarms about bodies in cars, jailbreaks and screams of terror...and they're always grateful' - half page feature on the false alarm calls received by the police (includes a b&w example photo featuring a dummy's arm).

'Never play cards with a belly-stripper' 'He shaves a pack to deal the hand he wants. Read on - and make sure he and other cheats get no change out of you'. (The 1/2 page feature includes the sub-headlines 'Amateurs', 'Shiners', Marking', 'Flaws', 'Palming', 'Shuffling' and 'Hands').

'AND NOW, FOR THE TENTH TIME...GOODBYE PICCADILLY' 'The bustling heart of London faces yet another demolition threat, but the circus which has celebrated many wars - and almost started one - could still cheat the bulldozers' (3/4 page feature with a largish b&w photo of Piccadilly Circus included).

'I SPENT £800,000 LEARNING ABOUT WOMEN' - 'Tony Curtis has earned more money than most people see in a lifetime...so where is it?' - 1 1/2 page+ feature/interview with Tony who is now taking stock of his cents and sensibilities, he's also got two ex-wives, five children and tax bills to worry about - (includes three b&w and four colour photos which includes shots of Tony's new wife model Lesley Allen (pictured on this week's cover), Janet Leigh (Tony's first actress/wife), Christine Kaufman (Tony's second actress/wife), a pic of Tonty with Roger Moore, pictured during the recording of tv's The Persuaders), a family shot of Tony & Lesley with two of his children from his first marriage (Kelly & Jamie Lee) plus a b&w shot of Tony with new wife Lesley and their young son Nicholas).

 This week's 'WIN FOUR CARS, A COLOUR TV AND A GARAGE' contest includes b&w shots of ten young ladies from Liverpool, with readers being asked to pick his/her favourite seven.

'WAITER, THERE'S NO WORM WITH MY DRINK' - 'Plenty would miss the nutty flavour it gives martini, just as some reckon honeyed mice and locusts leave roast beef cold' (half-page article).

'TAKE CARE WHEN IT'S YOUR MOVE' 'Some removal firms need watching, they can send your goods to the wrong place or even disappear with them...here's how to pack up your troubles...(1/2 page feature).

This week's one-page 'GIRL'S EYE VIEW' fashion/food/home page features the sub-headlines 'DOUBLR CHECK', 'Stop Glaring' and Putting Out The Tongue' (colour photos featured).

This week's 'Pop Spot' features The Jackson 5's 'SUGAR DADDY' - includes text and a b&w shot of the five-some...plus the lyrics to the song.

 'VIOLENCE IN COURT' 'It's become trendy to hold the law in contempt, to scream abuse at judges and disrupt trials...and the culprits are getting away with it' - one-page+ feature which includes two b&w photos from outside last year's 'OZ' (magazine) obscenity trial, a b&w shot of Marty Feldman (who was not very complimentary to the judge at the 'Oz' trial) (pictured here with Julie Ege & Vicky Hodge in a largish publicity shot for Every Home Should Have One)...plus a b&w shot of Mr justice Lawton who was presiding in a libel case in court when 27 demonstrators burst in and disrupted it).

'WATCH OUT - THIS GAME''S DYNAMITE' 'Sport for some people is holding explosives about to go up, others prefer whipping opponents or kicking around a red-hot cannon ball' - 1/2 page+ feature which includes articles of strange 'sports' in Chile, Afghanistan, Argentina and Malaya...plus a mention of a strange incident that happened during a cricket game on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya.

This week's three-minute fiction story is 'SPECIAL CASE' by James Raven.

This issue features a b&w glamour photo of: Italian actress Isabella Savona (6 3/4" x 4 1/2" approx) and a colour shot of Farah Foot (7" x 6" approx).

Plus there are the regular features including letters, cartoons, horoscopes, problems page, crossword, 'The SOUND and the FURY', sport etc. plus the classified 'ads'.

Also featured are several b&w and colour product adverts (some full page).

Apart from handling wear and a crease running across the centre (where the paper has been folded), this larger 48-page issue is in pretty good complete condition with all pages intact and no 'cut-outs'. 

The paper is large in size and measures 14" x 10 1/2" approx. (356 mm x 267 mm) and will be 'bagged' and posted (folded) in a gusset type envelope with cardboard stiffeners. *
